Film and Television 12

-Unit 1: Camera Skills-

Assignment 1: Walking and Moving with the Camera

Not everyone has a great way to hold a camera and move around to get the best shots they can, particularly if they need to be in motion. In this tutorial from one of my favourite YouTube filmmakers, Brandon Li, offers up great tips on moving with nothing more than your body and your phone. Thanks Brandon!
The assignment is to follow Brandon's advice, and then come up with some shots, showcasing how you managed to improve. Make them short, but fun!

A1: FT12: Pick a Mentor

You are looking for a filmmaker whose work inspires you that you can study and dissect for their lighting, sound, style, etc. At a later time, you are going to try and imitate their work by copying a scene and look how to get the elements right. For now, find that mentor! Please remember, this is a filmmaker, not an animator, or photographer.

A2: FT12: Shooting an Improvised Film

I should say, this is a very short film, not a feature-length film with Lord of the Rings characters and a cast of thousands. We're playing in a small range of time and looking to concentrate less on the look, but the chance to play with an open script, where the actors are given a general guideline and you shoot their scene and they improvise what they say to each other.

A3: Light it Up!

Using three key lights, students are going to light a subject, making changes to try and find the most effective way of showcasing the subject. They will then take test pictures, and finally film a short test film so that we can see how the final lighting setup has worked out. Remember, capturing in a photo is often easier with less light than a film.

B1: Beats!

This is looking to create a musical template to follow when creating a 30-second video. You need to find a song and divide it up into BEATS, or pieces that can be used to create changes in the film, like different shots, angles, perspectives, character viewpoints, etc.
